🏁 HIP HOP x HYROX 🏁

For the last year, I started training at a gym focusing on functional fitness. I joined because my sister told me to (who I’m dancing with in this video 💕). Little did I know, I fell in love with a different type of movement quickly which started my training journey for HYROX in Vancouver this December.

Why was I so drawn to this race? The moment I started training at @f45_training_langford and was introduced to the Hyrox scene, it immediately reminded me of the Hip Hop and dance scene. The whole race is basically a choreographed routine that tests your endurance, stamina, and perform on compromised legs while everybody cheers you on to keep going. If you’re working in a team, you have to communicate with each other to find where your strengths and weaknesses lie. And of course, you never know what happens during the race so you sometimes have to adapt on the fly.

Like in Hyrox, the race and timer don’t stop. If you’re tired, you keep going, but you train your breath work while you move to keep the momentum going. In the race, you are penalized or “no-repped” for poor technique so you must train muscles that will get you stronger and more consistent.

And of course the ADRENALINE AND EXPERIENCE. Though this will be my first Hyrox, the community who I’m training with is what keeps me going! Huge shoutout to @f45_training_langford for introducing Hyrox to me, @andy.ac0sta for always hyping up our Hyrox training classes with this song, and of course to my sister, @reamelissa_ , that I will be racing Doubles with in December!!!

Our first Hyrox simulation race (TF45) is next week on Saturday, September 12th! Come see us race between F45 Langford (@f45_training_langford ) and TFA Westshore (@tfawestshore )

When two artists come together, magic happens.✨

There is so much beauty in an improvised session. No rules, just movement. Improvisation allows you to explore outside of the box. You don’t need to have a huge technical background to improv, but you do need to have trust in yourself. How do you build trust in yourself? You get comfortable with being uncomfortable. The only person who can get you back on your feet when you get uncomfortable is YOURSELF. Sure, you may have support and friends cheering you on while you do it, but in the end, it’s your decision to pick yourself up again.

So when you dance and you have the ability to improvise at the end of a combo, build trust in yourself and just watch the magic happen. ✨

Also wanna mention the MONICA MAGIC. When I say impromptu session, I mean that I brought this concept and song to Monica just hours before meeting up and we truly didn’t know what to expect. This is our first time collaborating and we just built trust in each other to create something beautiful. 🫶🏽 so grateful to have been a part of the Monica Magic!!

You know when you listen to a song and you just feel that connection to your core? I forgot I had this song on my “Liked Songs” and when I was thinking of songs to create to, I immediately knew that this was the one.

Teaching and dancing this was so healing, yet vulnerable. But I think that’s the beauty of dance. Something special happens when you are locked in that moment and there are no limits to where your heart and mind can take you.

Thank you everybody for coming to Contemporary last night. It was such a special class. I didn’t document the students dancing this as I wanted that moment to be special for them without a moving camera in the room. But join us next week for another contemporary session 🫶🏽!

🤪 A SERIES OF SILLIES 🤪
I am not a perfect person. I have weaknesses. In dance, turns have always been a struggle for me. Can I see what’s going on in the turns that’s making it go funky? Yes. But I have been guilty of not being consistent in my own training and getting in my head with it all due to prior mindset, frustration, and generally just time. HOWEVER, it’s time to break that cycle. Even after 25+ years of dancing, I love being a student and making mistakes because that is how we all GROW. 🫶🏽

Is it scary? Absolutely. But, do it scared. You might be surprised of what you’re capable of!

That’s right, ya girl is leaving for Toronto next week to go to the Toronto Dance Teacher Expo! I’ll be soaking up all the beautiful knowledge in teaching dance and training! Because teachers need to train too!!!
